Job Summary:

Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion. Completing all artwork for sets, props, etc. for any production coming out of the scene shop. Keeping the paint area of the Scene shop organized and meeting safety requirements. Supervising student workers and Production students.

Job Responsibilities:
1. Ability to translate designer’s renderings, notes, and color elevations full-scale scenic treatments.

2. Paint and finish all scenic elements including priming, texturing, sculpting, and applying scenic details designed by the Scenic Designer.

3. Ability to organize and maintain inventory of painting supplies and tools.

4. Maintaining the safety, order, and cleanliness of all paint areas.

5. Maintaining all paint equipment.

6. Collaborate with other Production departments on scheduling, shared spaces, and other needs.

7. Maintain regular communication of project progress to Production Manager, designers, directors, and other Production departments.

8. Train and supervise students in basic theatre artistic skills.

9. Be comfortable working at heights on ladders and personnel lifts.

10. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.

11. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for supervising student workers, CSER students, and production students.

Job Requirements:
Undergrad degree in Theatre Arts or Art required. Skilled scenic artist with 3 years’ experience. Must have working knowledge of all areas of a paint shop and its tools/equipment. Must be able to follow a design and see it to completion. Able to supervise shop workers and keep paint shop organized. Must be able to work afternoons and some evenings/weekends. Strong people skills, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities. Must be highly organized and able to handle multiple projects at once.

Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business and community customers and associates.

Strong organizational skills.

Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.

Physical and Sensory Abilities
Occasionally required to travel to local and campus locations.

Frequently required to stand for extended periods to perform painting tasks.

Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.

Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.

Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.

Regularly lift 20 or fewer pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment
The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled scene shop and theaters. It is well lighted and the noise level is moderate. The scene shop is usually busy.
